If delights are small, they are bell-like. Euphonic with a chime that is round and sudden but without sharp attack. Sea breeze — which these chimes ride on — make clear a delight otherwise mundane. Music is more resonant; laughter among friends is more jubilant. Like how a long day makes a meal more filling, the hours on ferries make arrival on deck a symphonic end — there was resolution in that sound of drums.
There is an almost quaint humor in how unexpected delight hits you— like noticing a brick out of place in a wall or an old man in trendy clothes. I found that humor in the houses on stilts that stretch out from the shore. Was there really a need to build these convoluted structures on the sea instead of on land? Funny.
Delight compounds. As I pull away from that moment, echoes that grow stronger keep chiming. Swimming with friends. Eating at the bonfire. In my mind, these memories have accrued their value already.
